Gasoline direct injection

This used to claim that the 'Italian tuneup' method was of particular benefit to GDI cars, implying that it would reduce the typical carbon buildup problems. As far as I'm aware, that's not the case - carbon buildup comes about principally from a lack of wash effect; that is, no fuel is there to wash deposits from the intake, as there would be in port-injected engines. This a design problem and I don't see why any amount of user behaviour will undo it - only proper intervention.
