Respeecher

[edit]

With Jones having allowed Lucasfilm to use Respeecher to generate the voice of Darth Vader in future Star Wars projects, we should probably ask the question of how we want to deal with Jones' AI-generated performances going forward. From what I understand, actors' appearances via archival footage/recordings are generally included in lists of their performances. Should this also apply when said recordings are remixed with AI? - ZLEA T\C 04:10, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, no (but it depends on the manner of presentation). There's a distinct difference between historically including archival footage from the life of a subject, in which the *actual* subject was featured; vs. a posthumous, artificially generated recording in which the actual subject was not a participant. If we're talking about a list of appearances of an actor, and if the remix is based on pre-existing archival footage we could presumably use the original, but not the remix. In contrast, if we're not framing the inclusion as being an *appearance* from the actor, but a *depiction of* the actor, then I think it's OK (with appropriate attribution that it's AI-assisted). For instance, I would not include the posthumous CGI depictions of Carrie Fisher or Peter Cushing in a list of their performances (but they would merit mention from a notability standpoint in a legacy section).
