I seem to remember hearing a version that included something along the lines of

"We'll remember those who learnt the true price of freedom
and were still willing to pay.

There's a reworked version by Pete Seeger on "Spain in my Heart", ending
"Where we all learned the true cost of freedom
and so many of our brave comrades fell".
