"Je voudrais pas crever" does not translate to "I didn't want to croak" because that would translate back to "Je voulais pas crever". It would translate better to "I wouldn't want to croak".

This is a very good. It gave me informations I had not collected about Serge Reggiani singing the poem. May I add that Jean-Louis Trintignant actually turned Vian's poetry into a great success in the years 2011-2012, together with poems from Jacques Prévert and Robert Desnos, it has been registrated as a CD see here :,75731.php.
