Hi, I'll review this article in the next day or so. – Muboshgu (talk) 23:51, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, been longer than I intended... – Muboshgu (talk) 23:38, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
- Lead
- The lead is for important topics within the subject, so why are there red links? How important are those minor league teams to note in the lead?
- I personally thought it was important to mention as they each were professional (and each are most likely GNG passes and deserve articles). BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:31, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- On the other hand, the lead doesn't mention his (brief) professional baseball career or anything about being from New Jersey.
- I added both to the lead.
- Early life and high school career
- Many of those details are not covered by sources.
- I think each is covered by a source. Let me know if I'm wrong.
- MOS:QUOTATIONS: there are a few places where I think you are overusing quotes from contemporary articles, and the first paragraph of this section is one of them. You have reproduced every word of this source. Why?
- Removed.
- [[Plainfield High School (New Jersey)|Plainfield]] is an WP:EASTEREGG. I thought it was going to Plainfield, New Jersey. Please change to display "Plainfield High School".
- Done.
- The quote in the second paragraph of this section is again repetitive with your text.
- Removed.
- College career
- What does it mean that he "did good" against West Virginia?
- Removed.
- Link punter (football)
- Done.
- I don't think quoting the November 21 article helps.
- What about a shortened version? e.g. "He was described by The Wilkes Barre-Record as 'a good punter, the best forward passer on the squad and a shifty man with the ball, making him a triple threat player."
- Any idea what the 1926 injury was that required an operation?
- I wasn't able to find it.
- "He" didn't shut out Bucknell, 9-0, the team did, while he scored three points and contributed to the other six.
- Changed wording.
- I also don't see the benefit of the Pittsburgh quote.
- Removed.
- Do we know what "all-Eastern teams"? Any particular organizations? Might need more context for the lay reader on what it means (i.e., not an actual all-star game that he played in)
- Hmmm... I'm not sure what/which organization(s) picked it. BTW it appears there actually was a game between the all-east and all-west teams, see [1]. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:50, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
and was leader
is missing a "the".- Done.
- Link field goal, and consider mentioning more detail on how he scored his points (all field goals? any touchdowns?)
- Mentioned how he scored his points.
- Link All-America (that quotation I think is appropriate) and then delink it at the end of the section
- Done
- The Wilkes-Barre Time Reader and Evening Journal quotes, though, seem like puffery without adding much of anything
- Removed.
- Need a comma after "By November 21"
- Done
- Walter Eckersall: he had the authority to pick all-Americans? He's not mentioned at College Football All-America Team.
- It appears so per 1927 College Football All-America Team, where he's mentioned in "Other selectors". BeanieFan11 (talk) 00:16, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
- Professional career
- Link professional baseball and mention in prose that he was a pitcher
- " Done.
- Link hit (baseball) and innings pitched
- Linked hit,
where should I link innings pitched?- Done
- Linked hit,
- Was that his only game?
- It could be. I see a "Roepke, Scranton" listed at [2] with one game played.
- Link Conversion (gridiron football) for the "extra point" text
- Done.
- Don't start a paragraph with "He", for clarity, start it with his surname
- Done.
- How did these "minor league" football teams play an NFL team? Is that a thing that happened back then?
- I think so.
- And how did he play one game for Atlantic City and then just go join another team?
- I just could not find how/why he did that. The last mention of him with Atlantic City comes here (also at [3] [4]) and the very next mention of him is when he's signed by Clifton Heights four days later ([5]). BeanieFan11 (talk) 19:57, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
- Are there any minor league stats?
- Any football minor league stats would most likely be original research, as Pro Football Archives is the only website that provides minor football statistics and they don't list much (see https://www.profootballarchives.com/playerr/roep00200.html).
- I think this section needs some expansion in general. You mention two more games with the Paterson Night Hawks before he retires. Looking around Newspapers.com, I see this useful source saying Paterson needed to fill out its roster. This article you did clip but didn't use.
- Well I added a little bit more but I don't see what else to add.
- Personal life
- Also start the paragraphs with his surname
- Done
- Is there nothing else of note about his later life? In looking through Newspapers.com, I see a Johnny Roepke who was apparently in high school in Passaic NJ in the 1940s, which makes finding more about this subject a little more challenging.
- I couldn't find much else other than what I already wrote. BTW the Passaic Roepke may be the Penn State athlete's son, as his obituary ([6]) mentions "He is survived by his widow, Anne, and two sons, John of Wayne, and Robert of Passaic."
Putting it on hold. – Muboshgu (talk) 23:38, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
- Got through a few of your points. I'll work on the others in the next few days. BeanieFan11 (talk) 00:32, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

- Great. I'll take a look this weekend. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:47, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

- Follow-up
- The comment from "Early life and high school career" about unsourced content is that the first source doesn't give his birth date, birth place, or high school.
- I added a reference to PFR verifying them. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:48, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- I am as confident as I can be after reading this that he did only play in that one game. So let's add that.
- Added. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:57, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
BeanieFan11, I think that's about all else that I see. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:16, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Muboshgu: I provided a ref for the "early life" details and added that he only played one game with Scranton in baseball. BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:21, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- Great. I don't have any other comments so I will pass this. Congrats! – Muboshgu (talk) 21:47, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
