Ivory Coast connection[edit]

Of most interest to international readers is surely the Ivory Coast connection of S.K. Beveren. At one time they had an almost exclusively Ivorian team, which led Belgian fans and the press to nickname them S.K. Ivory Coast. The club, which was in financial difficulties at the time, was being used as a shop window for young Ivorian players who wanted to come and play in Europe, and indeed many of those players managed to make it into bigger European leagues.
