What to do with this article ?
[edit]@Schwede66: I seek your help. I am currently working on significant improvements to the article Kaikōura, but have become aware of this smaller article about the Kaikōura peninsula. I note that the majority of the existing content in this article is about geomorphology etc, including not only the peninsula, but also the offshore Kaikoura canyon (doesn't really fit the title particularly well). As it stands, the article is somewhat unbalanced in content. I would like to find a way of retaining the good content, but ending up with less duplication with the main Kaikoura article. Here are some options that I would like feedback about:
- leave this article as it stands, and just link to it from the main Kaikoura article (but this has the disadvantages of leaving this article in a relatively poor state, with some overlaps in content with other articles)
- merging this article into Kaikoura - placing all the content about geology and the canyon into new sections of the main Kaikoura article - probably sub-sections of Geography (feasible, but perhaps the geology/geomorphology content is too detailed for a more general article about the town and district ?)
- renaming this article to "Geology of the Kaikoura region", removing content that doesn't fit with this new title, add some more geology content about Kaikoura mountains etc, to "fill it out", and then linking from the main Kaikoura article
Perhaps there are other options as well. What do you think ? Marshelec (talk) 05:00, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- Marshelec, I've looked at this. And thought about it. Will find some time soon to write down my thoughts. Schwede66 02:05, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- Marshelec, I reckon that a variation to option 1 may be best. It's a decent enough article, just a bit too focussed on one particular aspect and then it also introduces another concept / topic. In the short term, you can link to it. It would not be appropriate to merge it into the Kaikōura article as it's too detailed for that. In the longer term, it could be made broader to cover all the topics that a peninsula article should cover. And Kaikōura Canyon could eventually be split off into its own article. That's at least what I'd suggest. Schwede66 22:45, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Schwede66: Thanks. There appears to be sufficient content and citations about the Kaikoura Canyon in the current article for a new start class article to be created on that topic now. I will prepare a draft of a new article about the canyon by copying the existing content, and if it looks OK I will publish and then delete the canyon-related content from this article. I will review overlaps and the need for some links between the two. I can then create better linkages from the Kaikoura article to the two separate articles about the peninsula and the canyon. Sound OK ?Marshelec (talk) 23:00, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- Marshelec, that's excellent. Just be aware of the need to give attribution when copying within Wikipedia. Schwede66 23:09, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- Schwede66 OK, thanks. This will be my first use of attribution for copying within Wikipedia. I have also just noticed that the content about the canyon is out of date, and doesn't describe the large underwater landslide that occurred in the Kaikoura earthquake. I have found one reference: [1]. So I will get underway. Marshelec (talk) 23:13, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- Marshelec, BTW, the German WP has a very decent article on this: de:Kaikoura Canyon. Suggest you read it via Google Translate. Schwede66 04:54, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
- Content about the canyon now appears in the new article Kaikōura Canyon and has been deleted from this article. I have traced articles that previously linked here (in relation to the canyon and the submarine landslide and tsunami risk etc, and adjusted them.Marshelec (talk) 07:37, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- This article about the Peninsula needs considerable work. I plan to work on expanding the content about the history of the peninsula, including a bit more about Māori history, and the whaling stations. But it will take a while.Marshelec (talk) 01:31, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
