My guess is that Charlie never existed in the first place, and the story is an allegory about a daughter remembering her father. The "gold" discovered at the end is the reconciliation of father and daughter and the forgiveness that was found now that the daughter understands her father and his life better. The father in fact imparts/passes on his life's wisdom to his daughter. Its very much psychological/autobiographical like Fight Club, The Mechanic, ET in that regard. Just an extra two cents.
