"Unilateral annexation"

[edit]

I don't think this is a correct description of the event taking into account Giorgi XII's petition for mediatization. A changed the article somewhat. Also, the description of Paul I as "liberal", and giving that as the reason for his assassination, is incorrect. I deleted that line. Please, feel free to respond. Gaidash

The 1783 Treaty of Georgievsk was clear: changes in the relations between Russia & Georgia, and between the Romanov emperor & the Georgian king had to be mutual. George XII didn't declare himself mediatized -- rather, he made an offer to Russia to accept mediatization on the specific condition that his dynasty would continue to reign over Georgia within the Russian Empire. Since that condition was (initially accepted, but finally) ignored by both Paul I and Alexander I, and the annexation took place without any mutual agreement to change the terms of the treaty, "unilateral annexation" is what occurred. I have changed the article accordingly. History must decide whether or not the annexation was warranted. FactStraight (talk) 17:53, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article's English/grammar needs work

[edit]

I've corrected some of it, but I don't have access to all the sources, and I hope I am not changing the true meaning of the content. This article either has been edited by a non-native English speaker, or gone through a bad online-translator job. HammerFilmFan (talk) 12:16, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
