Origin of the area and volume formulas
[edit]A classical origin of these formulas may exist. It would be surprising if this was not the case. While the cited reference does derive these formulas, it is only done in the Appendix. The main text of the cited reference applies these formulas without discussing their origin. Therefore, it would be far more appropriate to instead cite an older peer-reviewed source. However, no such source is currently known.
These formulas have not been found in modern text books. They are absent from Wolfram MathWorld. The oldest confirmed source is the ThatsMaths blog authored by Peter Lynch: https://thatsmaths.com/2021/02/11/apples-and-lemons-in-a-doughnut/
Surprisingly, the oldest known academic peer-reviewed source is the 2023 paper cited in the article text.
