From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1. I think "lip service" means that someone is saying they will do something, but they aren't going to follow through. They aren't speaking sincerely.

2. There's a clothing company named Lip Service.

3. I believe some people use it to mean "fellatio". Hence, it's use by that clothing company. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.38.0.113 (talkcontribs) 18:04, 16 October 2008

This is a disambiguation page. Basically, people end up here when what they looked for wasn't specific enough. The page currently gives info on existing wikipedia pages that people might have been looking for, and a link to a general definition of the term.
The general definition covers #1.
The company in #2 doesn't seem to have an article.
I am unfamiliar with the usage you suggest in #3, though it's possibly a correuption of the use of the term by lesbians to refer to cunnilingus ("lip" referring to labia).
I don't see anything missing from the disamb page. - Mdsummermsw (talk) 18:42, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Definations of lip service

[edit]

From answers dot com: "Verbal expression of agreement or allegiance, unsupported by real conviction or action; hypocritical respect: “Lip service continues to be paid to resolving regional conflicts, but there is no sense of urgency” (Henry A. Kissinger).

Verbal but insincere expression of agreement or support. It is often put as pay or give lip service, as in They paid lip service to holding an election next year, but they had no intention of doing so. [Mid-1600s]

an expression of agreement that is not supported by real conviction Synonym: hypocrisy"

In addition, Collins Essential English Dictionary quoted at the freedictionary dot com: "pay lip service to to appear to support or obey something publicly while actually disregarding it" Someone is going to point out that Wikipedia is not a dictionary. 89.242.82.4 (talk) 11:32, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article is a disambiguation page. If someone searches Wikipedia for "lip service", this article allows them to find the appropriate article, whether they are looking for the TV series, the song or the game show using that name. Definitions of the phrase, as given above, do not belong here. You may wish to start a page called (perhaps) Lip service (idiom). Keep in mind, however, that Wikipdia is not a dictionary, so the article will need to do a whole lot more than merely define the term. Otherwise, the article will be deleted. - SummerPhD (talk) 14:41, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
