Tokyopop volumes

[edit]

I recently completed my collection of Tokyopop's release of the original series and therefore am going to fill in the chapter titles here. I believe Sephy and I had a conversation a while back (or maybe it was someone else) about where I got the info (the Japanese release dates and chapters per volume) to create this list where I explained it was from some thread in a fan forum. The main article says the Tokyopop release follows the Chuokoron Shinsha edition from 1989, which doesn't match what the forum had. Since I was just using the forum info for lack of anything else at the time, I'm now thinking we should just make this table follow the Tokyopop/Chuokoron release. Thoughts? Maybe someone has sources but haven't gotten around to working on this article yet? Xfansd (talk) 21:03, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Luckily I've spent some time thinking about this previously so it's nice to have a chance to use my conclusions. I vaguely recall the conversation, and I did build some work using the data from that thread and possibly others as a placeholder. The source for the "adaptation" from the CS edition comes from Helen McCarthy's 500 Manga Heroes and Villains and I'm sure I've seen it repeated by her. Even if the volumes aren't layed out identically (and I don't think they are) the evidence now suggests that Tokyopop probably made the deal through CS and not Futabasha. I don't have the volumes to hand, so I wonder how Tokyopop gave credit. It's quite possible McCarthy has gotten it slightly wrong but the general idea would seem to ring true.
At any rate, I don't think we can make a dual edition table that includes chapters for two reasons. First, I wouldn't trust the volumes to have identical layouts. In fact I know they don't based on the information that is available. Secondly a change in chapter order/volume layout would mean comparing the two volumes which sounds a lot like OR to me (comparing two editions), even if it could be argued the evidence is in print. This doesn't cause a concern for a basic volume list in the article for the work, but does cause issues with dual language tables filled with chapter lists.
The other issue with chapters is rather more complex. This is partly because of page creation and moves and partly because of the number of titles and editions available. Now that the original manga series has it's own article at Lupin III, the logical list for the article listing the full chapter list and all the editions would be here, at this article name. A master list featuring an overview of all the Lupin titles from the original through to all the "letter" spin offs and well as the various offshoots that appeared in the quarterly manga magazine could go at List of Lupin III manga or some such. The thing that caused me to hold up on any changes was planning more than anything else.SephyTheThird (talk) 02:31, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
After writing that, I actually looked since I have the TP release (yeah, I should of did that first) and it confirms "© 1989 Monkey Punch [...] English translation rights arranged with Monkey Punch through Chuokoron-Shinsha, Inc., Tokyo and Tohan Corporation, Tokyo."
I know what you mean that they don't add up, because I just learned the TP volumes have 109 chapters which doesn't match the more commonly cited 94 number. I'm now thinking we should have two different tables. Use the "Chapter list" format seen at the beginning of List of Maison Ikkoku chapters or something like it for the 94 Japanese chapters, and then remove all Japanese info from the table used in this article currently so that it just has the English release. We don't have the original publication dates for each chapter, but a simple list of the 94 titles is better than nothing.
This way we don't need to worry about which Japanese collected edition to use. But if the basic info for one is available and someone really desires to include it, a third table using the chapterless version seen at Pluto_(manga)#Volume_list can be used. Yeah, I think splitting the spinoffs into their own article would look better. It's just crazy how many Lupin articles we have now. Xfansd (talk) 03:52, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
IIRC there is a chart in one issue of the DVD magazine that shows the original chapter order and one of the print orders. I'll have to dig it out. There is also the whole "additional chapters" thing which again I think is mentioned in there somewhere. SephyTheThird (talk) 08:29, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As I was changing it, I used the Italian Wiki page it:Capitoli_di_Lupin_III_(prima_serie) for the Romanizations. They have quite an extensive list over there, and the section titled "Orion" has 109 chapters, which might correspond to the Chuokoron-Shinsha/Tokyopop version.
