2012

[edit]

It seems a user has added a source for the film 2012 to this list, but the source does not suggest it is an action film. I see "sci fi-thriller", "sci-fi disaster" and straight-ahead "sci-fi" in the description. Please remember that not all disaster films are considered action films (such as The Deluge, A Night to Remember and Titanic. If you find a source stating it as an action film, go right ahead and re-add it. Cheers! Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:27, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IMDb

[edit]

I'd also like to note that IMDb should not be considered a valid source. To make anything a Good Article, or a Featured Article or List, sources from imdb are not allowed as imdb uses user-generated content rather then staff or expert. This is why it is not considered a valid source. Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:40, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Allmovie

[edit]

I'd like to note to users that although Allmovie is cited several times in the article, there are other sources to search from. Please don't add a cite to this list, that notes Allmovie as it's source if Allmovie says nothing of it being an action film. There are ways around this situation, such as the District 9 citation. Please look further. Cheers. Andrzejbanas (talk) 16:18, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comingsoon.net

[edit]

I'm not sure if Comingsoon.net should noted as a valid source for genre. It's seems to be just regurgitating what imdb says, which is an established as a source to not use. Andrzejbanas (talk) 18:40, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lord of the Rings

[edit]

On the topic of The Lord of the Rings films being here, I believe they fall more under Sword & Sorcery genre then they go under the action film. Critic Roger Ebert refers to the film as Sword and Sorcery here. As does Allmovie here. On looking up research to see if anyone claims it to be in the action genre, the only information I can find is people relating it to action figures or as a live action adaption of the story. Rolling Stone calls it action, but they do not seem to have a genre for fantasy (let alone Sword & Sorcery) and make no mention of action in the review article. If no further information can be added, this series should not be included. Andrzejbanas (talk) 21:19, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sword & Sorcery is not a genre. and ROTK has more action than TDK. 201.68.136.53 (talk) 18:57, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sword & Sorcery has it's own page here. Fantasy action doesn't even get a re-direct. You might as well include the harry potter films then. Besides, this is all WP:OR and lacks information per WP:RS. Andrzejbanas (talk) 04:23, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Return of the King has more action than die hard and TDK. It's an absurd not to consider it an action movie. And the Harry Potter movies are fantasy adventure, no action. but ROTK has action and a lot of it. 201.27.172.230 (talk) 07:36, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Despite this, you'll need a citation outside imdb and you are doing original research. I've left it for two months to find good citation and none has arrived. Andrzejbanas (talk) 11:58, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Dark Knight

[edit]

I'd not call this film an action film. First off, there are only 2 action sequences, the truck chase and the battle in the rooftop (in the end of the movie). Explosions don't count as being part of the action of this film because they are part of the drama and they are not consecutive. So in other words, TDK is a crime > drama > thriller with action elements, just like City of God. Terminator 2 is an action movie Here's is a better proof that TDK is not an action film http://drownyourself.com/?p=653

Was “The Dark Knight” really an action movie?

Dr Wikipedia describes an “action movie” as “a film genre wherein the story is largely told through physical action as opposed to dialog”. So right off the bat, we get a wrench in the works. No one who did not undergo a botched lobotomy in Mexico could argue that TDK lacked dialog. Some people can even make the case that there was too much exposition in the Nolan flick, with characters explaining their actions and the plot at every turn.

Continuin with the definition, we read that in an action movie, “The action typically involves individual efforts on the part of the hero”. And while it is true we did see a lot of ass kicking on Batman’s part in TDK, the story itself was not trully about him. It was as much about the Joker, Harvey Dent, Gordon, Rachel, Gotham, the volatile nature of human beings, the nature of madness and heroism as it was about Batsy. And what action scenes there were… there really wasn’t that many of those. I know, cause I timed them. Using VLC on super speed up, I timed all the supposedly action scenes in TDK. There weren’t that many of them.

I have counted a lot of scenes in TDK as “action” scenes to be fair. I even counted scenes that hardly constitute as action. I even included dialouge during the action scenes to be fair. And here it is. And remember, I was very generous:

Prologue: 5min28s Garage fight: 1m47s, 1 explosion (Tumbler) Pencil trick: 5 seconds Hong Kong fight: 3m29s, 1 explosion Judge car explosion: 5 seconds Bale disarms clown: 5 seconds Penthouse fight: 1m2s Joker shoots mayor: 10 seconds Club: 30s Highway chase: 7m1s, 4 explosions (bazooka, Tumbler, car, helicopter) + 1 truck flip Interrogation: 1m42s Bomb in MCU: 50 seconds, 1 explosion Dent and Rachel: 1m10s, 2 explosions Car crash: 25 seconds Explosion of hospital 1m Maroni car crash: 10 seconds Building fight: 5m8s You know how I got these scars?+Fall: 20s Batman jumps on Dent: 23s Final chase: 46s

All in all, 20 action scenes took 31 minutes 36 seconds. 32 minutes of action, leaving more than 2 hours of pure dialog, character exposition and all that other non-explosiony stuff people get so bored with.

If you want to get more mathematical on it, the action scenes in TDK took about 22% of the movie, and each scene lasted an average of 1.6 minutes, which hardly makes TDK an action movie. It definitely had action elements to it, but an action movie it was not.

So what exactly was TDK? What genre was it? I think what best describes Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” is super hero crime drama. Yeah, that works..

The problem with this definition is that you are using WP:OR. Several notable sources have described it as an action film as shown below. You are really following WP:OR by saying "I think Nolan describes" and such. Besides, who says this film can't be within both genres? Cheers. Andrzejbanas (talk) 13:03, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Removing The Dark Knight. According to andrezbanas. a movie has to have radiant guns, quicky one liners to be action movies. TDK doesn't have them —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.27.174.50 (talk) 23:43, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Rv. Don't go by what anyone on wikipedia says, check rules (WP:OR, WP:RS), and Wikipedia:Etiquette. Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:35, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For the record as well, good definitions can be found here for action films: here. Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:48, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm removing this film from the list, it is nothing like die hard, terminator 2 or the matrix. Chigurgh (talk) 07:40, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There has already been several sources discussing this. It's already been reverted. Andrzejbanas (talk) 12:14, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
