Merger[edit]

Probably should be merged. Lou Sander 04:42, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't Merge, rename each to better show purpose. One is a strictly alphabetical list, the other is sorted by catagory. The first is usefull if you have the hull designator and want to know what it means, the other is usefull if you know the type of ship and want to look up the hull designator. The intros should be merged into an article on hull classification (if not already there) and kept to an absolute minimum in the lists. --J Clear 14:35, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article is inaccurate. Major clean up of Wikipedia required.[edit]

There is a common mistake found all over the internet and repeated in this article regarding Amphibious Assault Ships. The assumption is that:

LHD = Landing Helicopter Dock

LHA = Landing Helicopter Assault

LPH = Landing Platform Helicopter

Per the Naval History and Heritage Command: "It is important to understand that hull number letter prefixes are not acronyms, and should not be carelessly treated as abbreviations of ship type classifications."

LPH stands for "Amphibious Assault Ship." LHA stands for "Amphibious Assault Ship (General Purpose)" and LHD stands for "Amphibious Assault Ship (Multi Purpose.)"

See INSTRUCTION 5030.8A for further clarification. The link to Naval History and Heritage Command is a good one for decomm ships. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaiotu (talkcontribs) 13:10, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
