Title[edit]

I wonder if it would be more appropriate to call this list of Provosts and Lord Provosts of Dundee or List of Lord Provosts and Provosts of Dundee as both are covered?

Garnet Wilson's party[edit]

As I have noted at Talk:Garnet Wilson it is wrong to describe Sir Garnet Wilson as a Liberal councillor as he never sought election as such. The Liberal Party and the Conservatives//Unionists did not officially contest elections in Dundee at this point with members of both parties running as Moderates and later Progressives under the auspices of the Municipal Electors Association and its successor the Dundee Ratepayers Association. Several Moderate Lord Provosts were active in the local Unionist or Liberal Party, but they are not classed as Unionists or Liberals here (eg Sir Alexander Spence and Sir John Phin were prominent Unionists and W H Buist was, like Wilson a senior Liberal. The last Progressive Lord Provost was W. K. Fitzgerald 1970-1973. The only Lord Provost of modern times who was not Labour or SNP was Harry Vaughan as by 1977 the Dundee Rate Payers and local Conservative associations jointly backed candidates (who were sometimes dubbed Progressive-Conservative) Dunarc (talk) 21:59, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
