Etymology

Local rumor has it that the name Lostwithiel is reputed to come from the fact that it is frequently covered in mist, so it is the lost - village (withiel). Anyone any idea about this? --Salix alba (talk) 02:24, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

The etymology is lostwydiel or some such thing, meaning place at the tail-end of the forest in Cornish.

I got here after reading a reference to the town in a letter from my great grandmother to her grandchildren, my father and aunt. The letter was written in 1938, and mentions an 1897 Christmas gift to her of a cruet set bought by her three children in "a funny old town in far off Cornwall called Lostwithiel -- which means 'lost with all' because an earthquake a thousand years ago swallowed it up". I have no idea whether this was her 1938 way of entertaining her grandchildren, the story her own children told her when they gave her the gift in 1897, or something she picked up elsewhere, but I thought it curious and was a bit let down in not seeing it mentioned in this article, even knowing that it was probably invention on someone's part. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.34.200.253 (talk) 16:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
