Cycling paths

[edit]

Two things puzzle me. Is the 1914 bridge still standing? One line says that it was to be replaced in time for its centenary in 2015.

In the "Final design" section, the final paragraph is almost impossible to understand. It implies that the 1914 bridge (although closed to vehicles) is, or will be, still retained as a cycling/walkway. The paragraph needs a rewrite by someone who is familiar with the bridge and whether it still stands (I'm not) and knows what is meant. Akld guy (talk) 04:59, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"The bridge was closed in the 1970s to motor vehicles". This cannot be correct. I know we used to drive over the old bridge to get to the airport before the new one opened, and I didn't move to Auckland until Christmas 1979. As far as I am aware, the old bridge was used by vehicles right up until the new one opened. And yes, the old bridge is still there. Lots of people use it for fishing off, there's a boat launching ramp on it, and people walk/run/bike across it. This note added 22 September 2017. Supplemental: one of the already linked to sources (NZ Herald) talks about the 1983 closing, so I've updated it.
Thank you for that info and for your 1983/new ref. Please indent your text with the colon character when replying in the Talk page so we can see who's being addressed. I've done it for you.
