This is a lot of controversy surrounding the investigation of the fire onboard of Scandinavian Star, including contractionary statements in the official report. Furthermore, new findings such as the deliberate blocking of two fire doors, tampering with an oil pipe and other evidence of access in otherwise staff-only portions of the ship has lead many to believe that the fire was deliberately started by someone who had an indepth knowledge of the ship. The pyromaniac in question seemingly had no such knowledge, and had perished during the second of a total of 8 separate fires which were started. More importantly the Norwegian police in charge of the investigation had asserted him as their prime suspect based on a witness report. The witness has since denied ever stating that the man who she had seen had been the pyromaniac in question, and that she had never been given the report in which she stated such. Possible financial motives for "getting rid" of Scandinavian Star have not been investigated either.

The NTSB is a US institution and has no cause or jurisdiction to investigate a fire on board a Norwegian ship in Swedish waters. The investigation was conducted by a specially-appointed joint Norwegian / Danish / Swedish investigation committee. I have not been able to locate a copy (much less an English translation) of the committee's report. DES (talk) 07:51, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The NTSB report is about the 1988 fire, not the 1990 fire. It occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, and therefore the NTSB had jurisdiction over that incident. It seems that the report is too old to be available online, as only newer incidents are available in PDF format, however, the report could probably be requested in print.

Fire/s?

Hi,

the chronology and number of fires is confused. It begins with a fire (so you think there was 1) which turns out to be the second , then goes to the first (so you think there were 2). Later on somebody dies in a fire before the first two (so now you think there were 3), and in the end six fires have been mentioned (but by now you've gotten a bit sceptical).

I agree (though I think "somebody dies in a fire before the first two (so now you think there were 3)" actually should be "somebody dies in fire 24 hours before a certain fire was started (so now you think there were 3)". Facts are confusing and disputed, but that does not mean the article has to be this inconsistent.-- (talk) 17:13, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There was a whole bunch of info missing on this theory. I didn't get into specifics but I think I cleared up the problems and it should make sense now. Be gentle with the criticism.
