SLEEPING WITH SIRENS [8/10]
‘'Madness’' (Epitaph records)
Album four represents judgement day for Sleeping With Sirens. Over the past couple of years, Kellin Quinn and Co. have grown exponentially without having released a truly great album, so it’s about time they delivered something that proves all the hype is worth it – as much to their detractors as their current fanatic fanbase. In ‘Madness’, they’ve delivered that and much, much more. Opener ‘Kick Me’ finds Quinn at his most versatile and gutsy. He’s meaner, more powerful and defiant than before, while the groove and pop nous on ‘Fly’ and the sweeping, acoustic-led ‘The Strays’ have boundless crossover potential.

With the force behind the likes of ‘Go Go Go’ and ‘We Like It Loud’, they grab the proverbial bull by the pointy bits and focus on living loud, living fast and living now. It’s exhilarating stuff, to such an extent that lower key cuts like ‘November’ feel a little limp in comparison. ‘Better Off Dead’ is a typical ’Sirens track lyrically; all disaffection and youthful pain. It’s also the best song they’ve ever written, but such is the consistency and quality of this album that it doesn’t stand head and shoulders above the rest of what’s on offer here. With this album and these songs under their belts, where Sleeping With Sirens take things from here is entirely up to them.
