United States Enviromental Laws and Magnesium
[edit]I have been told for years that you had to go outside of the United States to get the best quality magnesium. This was in relation to high performance auto wheels and other parts. It seems that some regulation hinders the production of high quality castings over air pollution concerns. Anyone know what this is about?Corumplex (talk) 21:52, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Machining costs of aluminium vs. magnesium alloys.
[edit]According to the section Magnesium_alloy#Designation the machinability of magnesium alloys is the best of any commercial metal, and in many applications, the savings in machining costs more than compensate for the increased cost of the material, while according to the section Magnesium_alloy#machining The special techniques that must be used in fabricating magnesium (working, casting, and joining) add considerably to the manufacturing cost. In selecting between aluminium and magnesium or a given part, the base cost of the metal may not give much advantage to either, but usually the manufacturing operations make magnesium more expensive.
Which one is true?

corrosion-resistant magnesium-lithium
[edit]"protective layer of carbonate-rich film upon atmospheric exposure... immune to corrosion in the lab setting." gizmag reporting source
Here we design an ultralow density (1.4 g cm−3) Mg–Li-based alloy that is strong, ductile, and more corrosion resistant than Mg-based alloys reported so far. The alloy is Li-rich and a solute nanostructure within a body-centred cubic matrix is achieved by a series of extrusion, heat-treatment and rolling processes. Corrosion resistance from the environment is believed to occur by a uniform lithium carbonate film in which surface coverage is much greater than in traditional hexagonal close-packed Mg-based alloys, explaining the superior corrosion resistance of the alloy.
