Name of the district[edit]

میدان ښار / میدان شهر In Pashto it is pronounced as "Maydaan Khaar/Shaar/Xhaar" while in Dari(Farsi) it is pronounced as "Meydan Shahr". Shaar/Khaar/Xhaar and Shahr stands for "City".

Khaar = Northern dialect of Pashto Shaar = Southern dialect Xhaar = Central dialect

As you can see, shahr and shaar are very similar. However, it does not mean that the name of the city/district is in Dari(.

There is another reason why the name of the district is not in Persian/Farsi/Dari. If it was in Dari, than it should have been "Shar i Meydan". I will use some examples

  • Pashto ---- Dari(Farsi)
  • Maydaan Shaar (Maydaan City) ---- Shahr-i-Maydan (City of Maydan)
  • Kabul Shaar (Kabul City) ---- Shahr-i-Kabul (City of Kabul)
  • Herat Shaar (Herat City) ---- Shahr-i-Herat (City of Herat)
  • () word to word translation of Pashto to English and Farsi to English.

There for the name of the city is in Pashto, not Dari.(Ketabtoon (talk) 04:53, 24 July 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Shar do not exist in Pashtu nor is it a native word. It´s a pure Persian word, not even existing in Ossetic and Kurdush as native. Pushtuns are known beeing for 2000 years nomads from mountains. During the British presence 50 Wardaki Pashtuns became Vazirs and moved with their tribe to Maidan-e Kalan and settled there. Read some book, uneducated Idiot. Ghobar´s book Tarikh e Afghanistan can give you some lessons. Pashtuns are foreign to the province and city.--94.219.198.90 (talk) 09:41, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whether Pashtuns are foreigners or locals of the city is not what we are discussing here. We are discussing the official spelling of the district. (Ketabtoon (talk) 14:36, 9 August 2010 (UTC))[reply]
The spelling of the dicstrict is Persian, naqleen Pashtun Jahood, even used in the Shahnama and Baburnama--94.219.198.90 (talk) 14:57, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whether it is used in Shahnama or not is not important. The current official name of the city is "Maidaan Shaar aka Maidan Shar" not "Maidan Shahr". The word ښار / شار does exist in Pashto language, which means city or Shahr شهر. In either case, Persian name of the city has been given along with the official Pashto name. Are you kidding yourself, Ketabtoon?? Where is the difference between Shar with one a in it and Shaar with two as in it? Shar or Shaar is an adaption from Persian into Pashtu and since Persian is the original word, and the region´s name was always Persian, it is no important to mention the Pashtu word, since both languages the same name is used. The resr if your post is pure BS Shar-i Meydan ...from where do you have that?? The Khorasanian school of Persian do not know a y after a consonant. And as you recognized it correctly, Shari Maidan would mean city of maidan but noone call it like this. That´s not the name of it. The name is maidan shar--188.107.8.82 (talk) 08:23, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is not about "a" or double "aa". It is about the "h" in the word. شهر = Shahr while ښار = Shar with no "h". The first one is Persian while the second is Pashto. The local name in Pashto is میدان ښار while in Farsi it would be میدان شهر. Since Pashto is the native and local language of 85% of the the residents of the city, it is very important to write the Pashto term. Also, since the official name is written in Pashto, not Persian. Maybe it was written as "Shahr" in the past, but now it is "Shar". (Ketabtoon (talk) 13:54, 11 August 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Name of the district was not spelled correctly[edit]

The name of the district is spelled as Maidan Shar, not Meydan Shahr.

"Presently its capital is Maidan Shar, (means Ground with city) which lays about 35 kilometers to the west of Kabul."[1]

I have given the official website of Wardag province as a reference.

Official website of Wardag Province: http://www.mwardag.gov.af/?pg=133 (Ketabtoon (talk) 01:02, 25 July 2009 (UTC))[reply]

http://www.mrrd.gov.af/nabdp/Provincial%20Profiles/Wardak%20PDP%20Provincial%20profile.pdf is another government website and they have spelled the name of the district/city as "Maidan Shar". (Ketabtoon (talk) 17:34, 25 July 2009 (UTC))[reply]
