Question on Grammar[edit]

Unsure if the word "reconnoitered" at the end of the first paragraph was the best choice. The sentence is written "He and his forces had moved south to Manzanares, Ciudad Real, where they reconnoitered with other like-minded forces," was the word supposed to be "regrouped" not trying to criticize just an observation.
