Needs attention from an expert on the subject
[edit]Some people from the technical committee of MESA are currently reviewing the text of this Wiki. We intend to start editing soon.

I'm in touch with an expert that has volunteered to help improve this Wiki, though his contributions will only be done through Word - hence why I'm here to help. Once we get a draft together, I'll post it on my Talk page first for others to take a look at.

Link 3 under sources is dead (MES: A guide to getting started; PACE-Australia's Process & Control Engineering website) --Vikingforties (talk) 15:05, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
It is live today (15 Oct 2010). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.74.148.2 (talk) 20:06, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Length of opening section
[edit]The opening section is too long and too detailed. Please consider editing it to provide a brief overview, with details moved to the lower below. wcrosbie (talk), Melbourne, Australia 07:48, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- Broken up the opening section (but still needs to introduce cross linking with other wikipedia articles), the next sections need some work, they jump straight to levels without introducing them. What paragraph does trigger the advertisement notice? Egrange (talk) 08:48, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- I thought including of the 'advertisement notice' could help to attract editors with relevant technical writing skills. See other suggestions below. wcrosbie (talk), Melbourne, Australia 09:27, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- Ok. The article looks smoother now, hopefully that'll also help attract contributions. Egrange (talk) 14:38, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Improving the opening section
[edit]Can I suggest the opening section's goal is to introduce the topic to a general audience, with relatively jargon free language? To "manage manufacturing operations" is not really much help. I'd like to know the function of the MES, as understood by it's operator, but in the language that the factory HR manager could easily understand.
Can I suggest considering inclusion of some mix of the following? Perhaps:
- "work-in-process on a factory floor."
- "MES keeps track of all manufacturing information in real time, receiving up-to-the-minute data from robots, machine monitors and employees." Techtarget
- balancing scarce resources to create products and value for customers
Or perhaps by completing the following statement: Managers of manufacturing plants use MES to ...
I've had a crack at creating a three sentence opening section. It introduces some of the concepts from further down the article, without going into too much detail. I hope it works for the casual reader. wcrosbie (talk), Melbourne, Australia 10:25, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- Looks much better and readable now. I only fixed a bit of grammar (since it's a plural acronym, MES doesn't take a leading a/an). I've tried to cross-reference the subject from other industrial software, process control, etc. articles, but there are many articles in that area that are just as rough/scary looking as this one was. Anyway, baby steps, I hope all the changes in the cross-referenced pages are going to attract contributions. Egrange (talk) 14:44, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Section "Functional areas" - the last two bullet points
[edit]The last two bullet points in the list seem like ill-fitting late additions: They reference "log books" that occur nowhere else in the article and they are oddly specific ("the edit lock feature", "the boiler", "cooling tower effectiveness").
Also, they add nothing new: The next-to-last point is about "Digitizing of log books" which would be part of "Collection of production data". The last point is about "The Audit Interface". Of course an MES needs an HMI, but this is orthogonal to this list: The HMI should visiualize all other points.
I think the two bullet points should be removed.
