Power Calculator was nominated for deletion. The discussion was closed on 07 January 2010 with a consensus to merge. Its contents were merged into Microsoft PowerToys. Origin of "Command Prompt Here"[edit]

A small bit of esoterica on the "Command Prompt Here" powertoy. The very first downloadable release of powertoys for Windows 95 did not include "Command Prompt Here". Within days of the release, a programmer (public name 'NSoftCo' on the bulletin-board discussion groups), created "Dos From Here" based on the ideas in the script of "Explore from Here", and published it as freeware. The file timestamp is 1/1/1996 01:00am. With the very next update of Powertoys, the Microsoft Windows Shell Development Team incorporated that script, with minor modifications and improvements, and called it "Command Prompt Here".

It was a nice little bit of collaboration that sometimes happened back then, when 'Windows' was young and Microsoft not quite so insular. I have a copy of the shareware DosFrom.zip file downloaded Jan 2, 1996 from the Compuserve network. I also recall taking part in the email discussion group.

I wonder if anyone thinks this worth a footnote in the article?

Well, I have the text file 'signed' by "NSoftCo", and I know the history is correct, but finding a credible printed or quotable source is highly unlikely. Oh well. I notice that "Open Command Window Here" is now built-in to Windows-7 from the factory (if you shift-right-click a folder) so NSoftCo has his legacy forever carved in code. :-) Phil Nickell (talk) 23:58, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Initial release[edit]

Windows XP and earlier versions are referenced in Operating Systems and License sections of the infobox. Shouldn't Inital Release reflect that by having the first Windows 95 version? Merko (talk) 07:02, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
