Murat etymology
[edit]This entry suggests all persons/places named "Murat" are derived from the Turkish name -- a matter not demonstrated. --Al-Nofi (talk) 20:31, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Murat is a very common Turkish first name, and since the adoption of the surname law in 1934, it has also become a common surname. It means "favorable personal desire". The use of the name in other languages is almost non-existent, and probably in most cases can be explained through inter-language borrowing from Turkish. Yet, there is one particularly notable exception with the House of Murat of Naples, established by the French Joachim Murat, and subsequently the surname Murat seems to exist in French descendants. There is also a small village in central France named Murat. Is there any earlier connection with the French version to Turkish, or is it just a coincidence? 193.145.230.3 (talk) 10:10, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
