Name Change

[edit]

This galaxy is generally called NGC 6240. The name "Starfish Galaxy" appears to be unused outside of websites that copied Wikipedia and one amateur astronomer's website (who cannot call himself an authority on naming galaxies). The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database and the SIMBAD database (linked to at the bottom of the article) do not list the name. Therefore, "Starfish Galaxy" is probably a generally unaccepted name.

If someone strongly objects to the renaming, please discuss it here. GeorgeJBendo 14:07, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Professional editing appreciated

[edit]

The amount of information on this galaxy is somewhat overwhelming. I am certain that this article is far from complete after my edit on 17 Aug 2006. If any professional astronomer sees errors or wishes to insert missing information, they should feel free to do so. GeorgeJBendo 14:04, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Last paragraph problems

[edit]

It is misleading and needs editing, professional or otherwise. For example, it suggests that the galaxy will cease to exist in 10 or 20 MY, which is absurd. (Perhaps the collision might be said to end by then, but this would be a matter of our definition and judgment, not physics.) Jmacwiki (talk) 15:12, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discrepancy in number of galaxies/black holes

[edit]

One of the last paragraphs state that there are three galaxies/supermassive black holes in the merger which aligns with the introduction of the article, but the sources for the introduction state that there are two galaxies/SMBHs SightedStar (talk) 19:51, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
