[edit]Superb idea for a new article - thanks Jacobisq.--Penbat (talk) 12:38, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
- Goes back to our earlier discussion Narcissism and defence mechanisms etc. Still haven't got hold of Thomas, Narcissism: Behind the Mask however; hope you will feel free to jump in with that and other input before Move Jacobisq (talk) 03:34, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- I still have the Thomas book. I will add a few sentences later. Doesnt matter if you move before i add. Do you have any other sources for defense mechanism sequences often employed by narcissists (where if one defense mechanism doesnt work he tries another) ? Might be able to have a sequences section or subsection. This article will fit in nicely into Template:narcissism - i will organise once moved - i will change "defense mechanisms" to "narcissistic defenses". --Penbat (talk) 09:28, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- Just thinking that you have written text on narcissistic defenses as an evolving generic concept. That is absolutely fine but there is also the other way of looking at it, from the point of view of individual defense mechanisms such as in Splitting_(psychology)#Narcissistic_personality_disorder. --Penbat (talk) 10:55, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- thought I'd try a "Sequences" subsection based on vaknin in 21st century - Thomas might come in there too. I take your point about a cross-section, comprehensive list, but haven't come on a good source. Maybe add an extra section (with links to other pages) at late stage? - Ill try to add a few sentences from Thomas later today. --Penbat (talk) 11:13, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

- What is "and others" in "Narcissistic defences have been defined as those processes whereby the idealized aspects of the self are preserved and the limitations of the self and others denied" ? --Penbat (talk) 15:25, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
- I think what they mean is "the limitations of the self and the limitations of other people are denied" - agree its a bit elliptic, will add [of] as simplest solution. Otherwise looking good to me, will hunt up some "what links here" Jacobisq (talk) 03:33, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Article added to narcissism and defense mechanism templates.--Penbat (talk) 10:18, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Quotations
[edit]Why is so much of this article, including the lead sentence, placed between quotation marks? Is there a scheme for using single and double quotes? Shouldn't we attribute some of these quotations? Will Beback talk 22:09, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
Academic authority
[edit]In the 21st century section, Vaknin is the primary source for the cerebral and somatic concept, which appear to be the main content of the section, although the reference cites a health journalist (as opposed to an academic psychologist or psychiatrist.) I would question whether it is appropriate to propagate Vaknin's layperson's opinions as if he were some kind of academic authority on all things narcissistic.
