Map

[edit]

I think it would be really nice/helpful if we could get a map that shows the area more close up, that can be used here without license/copyright issues. I haven't found one yet. (The developer, JBG Smith, has a good one, but I don't know if it's free to use here.)

I'm posting in hopes that others will look and maybe have better luck finding one (or perhaps make one -- I haven't done that for Wikipedia before, so I don't know what goes into it, but I may try if no satisfactory one can be found). --EightYearBreak (talk) 16:10, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I took a stab at it myself. This is based on the District of Columbia map, so it's not perfect at showing Northern Virginia, but it does a pretty good job of showing how things relate to each other at the right scale. The Northern Virginia map used on a lot of pages does not work because when I placed the pins on the map, they all bunched up in the corner, since Arlington and Alexandria are such a small slice of the overall area. I thought about using a map of the whole state of Virginia and highlighting Arlington and Alexandria, but that doesn't give you any real sense of where National Landing is, since it's not the entirety of those two places, and the location relative to Lynchburg or Richmond is not particularly noteworthy. This map seemed like a reasonable compromise, but I would love any feedback or suggestions for improvement. --EightYearBreak (talk) 22:15, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alternate Map

[edit]

Alternatively, I had a thought that the map above, by using point-markers, might be a little confusing, since Arlington and Alexandria are already represented by their border outlines on the map, and neither is a small town located at a single point within the jurisdiction. Here's another stab at it, this time removing the points and neighborhood names from the city/county labels, and making the labels more centrally located. As always, comments and suggestions are appreciated. --EightYearBreak (talk) 22:10, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
