Outdoor and Indoor records
[edit]Indoor records are now being recorded so perhaps this a good time to consider the formatting.
Some suggestions:
- Use same format for both Indoor and Outdoor records
- Use same format as World records in athletics: Event, Record, Athlete, Date, Meet(only used in Men's outdoor), Place, Ref (Nationality clearly not needed).
- Or, use same format as IAAF.org World Outdoor Records: Discipline, Perf, Wind, Athlete, DOB, Venue, Date (again - Nationality not needed).
- Or, same format as used by Athletics New Zealand: Event, Time/Distance/Height, Name, Date, Venue
- The above formats are very similar. Not sure of the benefit of Meet since it just makes the page wider and IAAF and others don't bother.
- The meet information can be included in the reference.
- No need for the flags - we don't have those flags on the page of each athlete, to show where they ran their PB and we don't need it here.
- No need to link each instance of London or United States - once should be enough for those people that want to find out more about those places.

- I prefer the ANZ format. Agree that Meet is not necessary (and in any case it will be difficult to identifiy in many instances). Flags are also completely unnecessary (although it wouldn't surprise me that some project group disagrees). The convention for linking of names, places etc appears to be that only the first instance be linked. Cheers, DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 22:38, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Confusion as to the definiton of "record"
[edit]Records need to be recognised by a reputable authority, in this case Athletics New Zealand. Anything else is a list of best performances. If there is no citation identifying them as such then that is original research which has no place in wikipedia. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 22:29, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- Here's a list of national records by IAAF (they start at page 69). Will this work as a reference? Is IAAF reputable enough? Pietaster (talk) 00:10, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- Not in this case! These are NZ records and need to be ratified by Athletics NZ. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 00:16, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- In that case, should we list the 5km road race records, which do not appear in the record lists available on the Athletics NZ web site and aren't an official IAAF road record distance either? Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 05:58, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- No. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 07:15, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Mixed Relay record. Why there is team of Fiji in New Zealand records?EskoG-67 (talk) 14:48, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- The record was set IN Fiji, all members of the team are New Zealanders. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 20:11, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
Videos
[edit]In what way does including a video add anything to this article? DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 19:16, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
- Video adds a visually reference. Why are you against it? See formatting according List of world records in athletics.Montell 74 (talk) 13:14, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- This video adds nothing. It does not accurately demonstrate the distance thrown which would be the main reason for including a video of a field event. In fact it is a video shot by the coach or one of the other athletes for technical assessment rather than any audience, making it of negligible value for the casual user reading this article. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 19:15, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not of your opinion. First job of a video is to show the development of the record. Not only the record-distance, but moreover place, conditions, atmosphere. Everything a video can show what maybe a news-reference doesn't. Montell 74 (talk) 19:30, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- It doesn't actually show the record. It could be any shot put throw, the only way anyone would know how far the throws were, or that they were records is because other information indicates that. That other information is found in the other citations anyway which is why this particular video does not add anything of significance to the record or this article. A better video would, this one doesn't. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 20:56, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Purpose of this article.
[edit]The lede says "The following are the national records in athletics in New Zealand maintained by New Zealand's national athletics federation: Athletics New Zealand (ANZ)." Why then are there a prepondernce of entries which are most definitely not "records...maintained by...ANZ"? Either they should be removed or this article should be redefined to include such non-records. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 01:58, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
- I changed the intro. Maybe you find some fundamental reasons for the refusal of acceptance by ANZ (f.e. Kim Robertson at 1985 World Games)? It would be more helpful than removing.Montell 74 (talk) 10:09, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
- ANZ has a long history of not ratifying records for various reasons. They have also retroactively ratified records which contradict their previous practice. There are still age group records which are inconsistent. That does not justify adding performances which are not recognised as records by ANZ. The IAAF has also retroactively recognised "records" even thpough such performances were not eligible for records at the time (e.g road races) and therefore cannot be realistically regarded as records even if the IAAF says so (road courses are notorious for being inaccurately measured, moreso many years ago when no record was at stake). Just because the IAAF lists it as a record does not mean proper record ratification procedures were followed. Either this article is about actual records as ratified by ANZ or it is merely a collection of performances some of whic are records and some of which are clearly not. Including the latter degrades the quality and reliability of the article. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 10:49, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
Unreliable source
[edit]This source cannot be relied on. Firstly the 58.62 for Kirsten Hellier was never a record and both Hellier and Kaye Nordstrom surpassed the distance within a few months. Any number of reliable sources list Hellier's best and the actual NZ record with the old javelin as 62.52 in 1994. Secondly the 49.50 for Nic O'Brien is obviously a misprint for his 49.90 on this occasion which was the NZ record prior to Michael Cochrane (note that the location is Storrs, Connecticut, not Storrs, South Yorkshire).
