Someone did see something (according to the book)

It's been a good 31 years since I read the book. I wrote to the author, but never received an answer. It is my faint recollection that a secretary or clerk from the bank, had the ideal view. Where she sat is described in the first 1/3 of the book...........an innocuous sentence. As the murder investigation begins, and towards the end of the book, they describe the layout of the bank and it is very clear to read that the clerk had to have been able to see the entire event unfold, BUT, given the hatred of the town towards Mr. McLeroy, it is clear why she never came forward. I remember connecting these dots 31 years ago and writing to the author.
