Photos[edit]

I have four photos of the car, as built by the junk yard dealer. They are personal photos ready to upload. I do not know how to do that, or arrange them on this page. If someone can do that, please email me for photos. drivefastturnleft2000@yahoo.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by Drivefastturnleft2000 (talkcontribs)

  • I am the contributor of the comment about the junk yard dealer sending the car to Hendersonville. There is a comment added saying the comment needed verification. I don't know exactly what is needed. I lived in Hendersonville from 1976 until 2000, and the local newspaper put in stuff like this all the time. When they wrote about the car, I went to the House of Cash and made my four photos. I can verify the story, but anyone else could if they went to the archives of the Hendersonville Star News (local newspaper in Hendersonville, TN). • The unsigned tag is because you didn't sign your comments per talk page rules. Actually, for the first one you posted comments on the actual article, I put that tag there so people would know who made the comment. If you click on the word "unsigned" that's highlighted it will take you to a page that explains it. It doesn't mean you need to verify your life story or put your real name. --TheTruthiness 00:45, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the image of the car on this page into a thumbnail. The image was larger than would fit on the page, before. DannyBoy2k 11:15, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

do you know where car is now?[edit]

hi, saw you had pics of car, I would like to go see but cannot find out where car is now, would appreciate any info you have. thanks cathy--Catkellner 15:32, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have unfortunate news. The vehicle, being built before Ebay et al, was crushed in 1977. we have three more pics from the promo day you see on the main page, but they are my dad and johnny cash shaking hands, etc. nothing to do with the car or song. the gentlemen in the car with johnny are his manager and agents. the car pictured never ran. originally the song was not a huge hit, hence the promotional vehicle and pics. later, the song became a hit and a running version was "professionally" built but not to the song's specs and the pieces(doors, fenders, etc.) fit well together without the offset spaces and irregular body lines. meaning the car did not look like a hodge-podge like the song implies. i have seen a picture of that vehicle, but never actually saw it and do not know where it is now. 68.54.228.214 21:25, 8 May 2007 (UTC)kelsey fitzpatrick[reply]

Alternate Lyrics[edit]

It has been said that Johnny Cash would create alternate lyrics for this song when performing it in concert. Reportedly, he performed it on August 20, 1980 in St. Paul, Minnesota[1], with these altered lyrics:

ORIGINAL:[2]
So we drilled it out so that it would fit
And with a little bit of help with an adapter kit
We had that engine runnin' just like a song
Now the headlight was another sight
We had two on the left and one on the right
But when we pulled out the switch all three of 'em come on.

ALTERNATE:[3]
So we drilled it out so that it would fit
And with a little bit of help with an adapter kit
We had that engine runnin' just like a song
Now for horsepower we were completely stacked,
We had an engine in front and an engine in back,
But the radiator? Well we only needed one.

Are there any other variations known? 2600:6C52:6680:2600:E04E:6DC4:4886:A991 (talk) 00:28, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have only heard the official recording, so I can't say, except that sounds like, in those lyrics, the characters in the song are incorporating Chevrolet Corvair parts. Playerpage (talk) 00:36, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The "Outro" reference[edit]

When Johnny sings the outro tag,

"Well, it's a '49, '50, '51, '52, '53, '54, '55 '56, '58 '59 automobile, It's a '60, '61. '62, '63, '64, '65, '66, ......."

that parodies another classic country tune popular a few years earlier. Anybody recall what it was and who sang it?

Better 8 years late than never on the answer. You're thinking of "The Auctioneer" which used the same general melody and format for its chorus. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 16:39, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese worker who stole one piece at a time[edit]

The references no longer work, can anyone find find a replacement?--74.131.90.156 (talk) 18:42, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

On my addition: The " One Piece At A Time " Cromemco CS-#

I was the one who swiped the CS-3. Cromemco was one of the places that built S-100 micro computers in Silicon Valley at the time. The song made me wonder if I could smuggle the parts right under the security guard hired to watch the employee entrance just for that purpose. Yep, I did.

The only non-original part was the terrible PRESCII drives. I used Shugart 851s to boot up. Aeb1barfo (talk) 02:36, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Music video[edit]

There was a "pre-golden age of video" music video produced for this song, featuring Johnny and June Carter Cash performing a comedy skit to the music. They even made up a car to look like the one described in the song. Does anyone know the circumstances around the video? Was it made as a promotion or was it produced for one of Cash's TV specials? A section on it should be added - especially as it predated the rise of the music video era - but I don't have enough information to put a section together myself. (The vehicle featured in the video does not appear to be the car for promotion that is discussed in the article).68.146.52.234 (talk) 16:38, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
