Proposed removal of language variety template[edit]

It is proposed to remove the template {{Use Indian English}}, inserted without prior discussion in 2019. There seems little reason for this (per MOS:ENGVAR and WP:TITLEVAR). The article's topic was expressly worldwide in scope, notwithstanding its original appearance in India. This should allow spelling consistency within the article as most source quotations and page elements (infoboxes etc) use US spelling. Especially terms such as "organization" seem to be accepted globally even when local English spellings predominate. 198.179.75.38 (talk) 19:25, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I'd rather standardise to Indian spelling (or even British, given that Besant and Leadbetter were both English) and eliminate the US spellings. I don't think American English is the obvious choice for this article. Having said that, you'd done so much work on this article I'll leave it to your discretion! Thanks for your comment. The main issue (for readers) imo is one of consistency. This involves spellings in quotations and static template (infobox) text. Most of these use US spelling. Before the language variation template was inserted, {{EngvarB}} was present, again without any discussion afaik (though the article did use multiple spellings in the past). In any case around 2019 the article mostly followed US spelling. I don't know if the nationality of the main actors is significant as far as the topic is concerned. At least officially, Theosophical organizations did not seem to emphasize national origin or cultural differences. If the World Teacher Project's development was factually influenced by such factors, that information would belong in the article. If the existence of such influence is a later theory, scholarly or not, it should be presented as such, i.e. as a theory, not fact. 71.105.141.131 (talk) 00:33, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Removed {{use Indian English}} in line with the proposal and WP:BOLD, and standardized to US spelling according to MOS:ENGVAR. The related language-variation template ({{use American English}}) may be inserted in the future if there are no objections. A few copyedits, simplifications and neutrality enhancements were attempted. Please see diff here. 24.103.63.182 (talk) 14:30, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
