What does the "s" suffix indicate?[edit]

I suspected it might be "superheated" but looking at where it appears on the list I think that's wrong. I can't find the answer anywhere. Does anyone know of an authoritative source? Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬 at 08:01, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Pennsylvania Railroad used the "s" to designate superheating for a good few decades until they got to the point where every locomotive was superheated and the designationh was unnecessary. The following technical document is the best source for PRR locomotive information I've ever seen.
