Methods

[edit]

In accordance with the guidelines, only reliably cited methods can be published, and the methods contained are not cited. I propose the article only cover methods from a general perspective at a high-level because palming can be done with any small object that fits roughly within the hands and the methods used are too numerous to include here. In principle though, all palms are the same: put the object into your hand in such a way that the audience cannot see it and do not draw undue attention to the hiding place. To describe only a card and coin palm is too narrow a view on the subject. For those seeking more detailed, tutorial information, a reading list should be included at the end of the article of well-respected sources, such as Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. Then this article will contain sufficient information to describe what palming is and what it is used for, achieving its encyclopaedic duties, whilst directing those searching for a tutorial to more suitable sources. What's Next

[edit]

I was reading the Wikipedia:WikiProject Magic page, and noticed that "Palming" was listed under "Requests." Well, here it is. It's as thorough as I feel I can make it, but there's a couple thoughts still running through my head about it:

Non-Magic Uses

[edit]

I suppose the Uses section could delve into non-magical uses, but I'm not familiar enough with any to actually write about them. In fact, all I can think of is using it in gambling, but the techniques are largely identical, only the motive changes.

Photos

[edit]

I made the descriptions as clear as I could. Pictures would help immensely. I'd be willing to take them myself, if doing so would be helpful to the article.

I was wondering about small thumb nail videos. I have a few close ups of my hands performing basic slights. What does anyone think?Jugglinbob 02:26, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As a non-magic person who has just read the article, I think that pictures and/or videos would be wonderful. Dfsghjkgfhdg (talk) 03:38, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spoiler

[edit]

Why does this have a spoiler warning? It's not a book or movie etc.--Hraefen 04:52, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It reveals a magic secret -- it's not just books or movies that can have spoilers. I suppose that the technique of Palming isn't one of the most secret of secrets, given the number of people with relatives who do the "coin from behind your ear" thing, but I thought it best to include the warning anyway. Anyway, if the Double lift deserves a spoiler warning, I figure this does too. CrayDrygu 15:43, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

So why is masturbation important?

[edit]

So why exactly is masturbation important?

* The Classic Palm is most often used for removing the top or bottom card from a deck or packet of cards. The hand holding the deck slightly raises or offsets the top card, which is briefly covered by the same hand. This hand is held slightly arched, with the fingers somewhat together. Pressure is applied to the short edge of the card with the bottom pad of the thumb, around the first knuckle. The pressure causes the opposite end of the card to rise up into the palm of the hand, where it can be held in place by the finger tips. As the hand concealing the card is now in a somewhat unnatural position, masturbation is especially important here.

I think the term is misdirection...

Edited so the page contains less masturbation, and more misdirection

In line with this, why is there a comment about why people hold magicians in high esteem because of the pants-fly trick? Is this supposed to be ironic, and if so, why is irony in a Wiki? ArekExcelsior 08:01, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe some of these additions were possibly manevolent bits of misinformation by Halvermac -- at best, they're questionable and unsourced. I'm going to revert a bunch of them. PenguiN42 17:04, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedia-ify

[edit]

Some parts of this article read like a magic tutorial, not an encyclopedia entry. The methodology should be properly syntaxed (I'll try do it after finals), and a history section should be added. --Iclavdivs (talk) 01:41, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exposure of techniques

[edit]

I don't understand why there are descriptions of the palming techniques. They're too short and not very detailed so I doubt anyone would be able to actually learn how to palm from them (let alone this is an encyclopedia, not guide about magic), yet they still reveal enough to get a picture how it works. This kinda kills the idea of illusion. I think it would be enough just to state that there are various techniques, give their names, and that's all. If somebody will REALLY want to learn how to perform illusions, he'll find it out by himself, in books, DVDs etc. What I'm trying to say is that these descriptions will cause nothing more, then making more people heckle, ruining the magic of illusion for people who just want to enjoy it.

I wanted to write only about palming but I think what I said relates to all articles about magic on Wikipedia, where techniques are revealed. --Bastek2a (talk) 20:47, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
