The text says that the term originates with Mourinho's Chelsea. Perhaps it's at that time when it became known in the English language. However, it's been used for decades at least in Spain (aparcar el autobús) to denote exactly that ultradefensive style of playing. There are several sources that affirm that argentine Héctor Veira said when he was coach of Bolivia national team (1998-2000) : "We put a bus in the goal but they put the ball through the window".
