Attention needed
This article is in DIRE need of attention...hardly anything is sourced and I'm hardly an expert...I've tried to help through wikifying and removing non-sense, but as for improving this article there isn't much I can do. --XRDoDRX (talk) 17:12, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
- As an experienced pickleballer (and our local rule maven), I didn't find any of the material about play and rules to be inaccurate (aside from some wording ambiguities). Everything is paraphrased from the official rulebook (current version: https://usapickleball.org/what-is-pickleball/official-rules/) Aside from citing chapter and verse (e.g., "rule 6.C.1" for line-calling rules) for each sentence or paragraph, is it possible to just state that this summary is extracted from that document? Not accurate
Pickleball is NOT a Paralympic sport. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.254.250.217 (talk) 05:29, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Fair attempt at the "court dimensions" diagram, but would better depict the rectangular shape if horizontal and vertical scales were more similar. 2602:306:CD89:8710:6DBC:B75C:32B0:2B3C (talk) 01:14, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
Where does the Joan Pritchard quote in the History section come from?
I searched the source given for it and nothing even close is in there.Gouncbeatduke (talk) 10:35, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Pickleball Content Suggestion
My apologies if this is not the correct forum for posting this question, but is there a way of connecting with Editors/Wikipedians who are qualified to make edits to the pickleball page and associated pages, sharing the content via email documents or other non-publicly posted means direct to the editor(s) with interest in evaluating content suggestions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by InformationPower (talk • contribs) 21:06, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
In comparing the pickleball page to other sports, there are a number of content sections yet to be populated. One in particular that would be interesting to many players would be a section for "Tournaments". While there are probably thousands of recreational/amateur level tournaments, the field of top professional players is still relatively small, and the significant events at which they compete could provide insight on which are the top competitors, and as time moves on, historical winners of each event (which may get their own pages?). The Website pickleballtournaments.com lists the top players by category (https://www.pickleballtournaments.com/ranking.pl) followed by a list of the major and ranking tournaments at which they participate.
- If you have a specific text addition or change in mind, please share along with secondary sourcing which verifies the claim. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:17, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
It would probably be good to have a section entitled "Professional Tours and Events" or something similar. There are currently two pickleball tours in the USA: the APP Tour (Association of Pickleball Professionals, apptour.com) and the PPA Tour (Professional Pickleball Association, ppatour.com). Unlike other professional tours, the tournaments hosted by the pickleball pro tours typically include amateur divisions for various age groups and skill levels. Additionally, there is a new professional event that was first held in the fall of 2021 called Major League Pickleball (majorleaguepickleball.net) with 32 professional players (16 male and 16 female) being drafted into rosters for 8 teams with 4 (2 male and 2 female) on each team. The teams competed against one another with the best teams meeting for a championship match. The event involved some unique features and was a great success. ~Submitted by a pickleball fan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:B117:9800:CD87:8E45:9106:1162 (talk) 20:33, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
International Status Section: World governing body of pickleball
An anonymous edit was made to remove the following statement. I reversed the edit and included a source that describes the status of the two "governing bodies".
- ... "but there are two pickleball federations acting as governing bodies across multiple nations:"
The same anonymous edit also inserted the following statement about the IFP. I also reversed this edit because it categorically states that the IFP is the world governing body, and it is worded in the form of an advertisement for the IFP without any source referenced. Also, a separate article has already been created for the IFP here; International Federation of Pickleball. Details pertaining to the organization should be included in the main article for the IFP, not in the Pickleball article.
- "The IFP is the World Governing Body of Pickleball & is working on the development of pickleball on grassroot level. The IFP has a moto #nocountryleftbehind , true to this IFP not only helps in development of the game and infrastructure building but it also helps in equipping the country for representation on global scale. IFP is also gearing up with full zest for Pickleball to be an olympic sport at the earliest. IFP is very confident of Pickleballs entry in olympic as a demonstration sport in the next olympics."
I have not found any sources that support either the IFP or the WPF as being the official World Governing Body for the sport of pickleball. The IFP was created by the USAPA in 2010 for the purpose of being the world governing body, but USA Pickleball resigned from the IFP in March 2022. Neither the IFP nor the WPF are members of the Global Association of International Sports Federations. An argument can be made the USA Pickleball is currently the de facto governing body, since it represents the largest number of current pickleball players. If anyone is aware of an authoritative source that would determine which organization should be considered the world governing body for pickleball, please let me know, or update the article accordingly with citations. Poor organization
This article seems well written, but the order of its sections does not seem well thought out.
The first thing people want to know about an encyclopedia subject is: What is it?
For this reason, a description of the "manner of play" ought to come immediately after the introductory section.
This does not need to be in full detail: It should just acquaint the reader with how the game is played.
(The introductory section's statement that Pickleball "combines the elements of several racquet games" does not say enough about how the game is played.) 2601:200:C000:1A0:F196:779A:C4F5:ED4D (talk) 16:28, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your input. I have made some changes to the introductory section that I think provide a better description of the sport and give readers a better understanding of the sport. Feel free to provide additional feedback or suggestions regarding the introductory section, if you still think it is lacking. I am hesitant to modify the order of the other sections, only because the current order generally follows the order other racket sports are organized. In fact most Wikipedia articles that have a History section seem to include that section just after the introduction. We are free to change that order, but it is apt to be challenged, unless it can be demonstrated that the revised organization is superior. The Table of Contents always follows the introduction and can be used by the reader to go directly to any specific area of interest. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 20:17, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
How did pickleball become so well known
History - How did pickleball become so well known that it could be used as a clue in Jeopardy? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kirez (talk • contribs) 16:23, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm confused. How could Pickleball both originate in Olympia and be invented in Bainbridge Island? 71.231.164.222 (talk) 18:50, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
I have a sneaking suspicion the Piqals and Skillats story is something someone randomly added. Google search for both teams pulls up only articles that pull off Wikipedia. cargocontainer (talk) 23:43, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Shouldn't the sentence, "To minimize any advantage the serving or receiving side might have at the beginning of the game" end in the word "point" not "game"? Also, how do we know that is the reason-- compare to constraints on serving in other paddle/racquet sports? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:8000:8F40:3B08:39EA:279F:8E6F:AD30 (talk) 16:34, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
First Person Writing, Non-encyclopedic
Several places in the article, as it stands now, are in the first person, or simply informal in tone. I'm not sure how to fix it, as I'm not sure where the content itself came from. Pawsplay (talk) 05:57, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Pickleball is not tennis
For those of you who may be inclined to put pickleball under a tennis portal or wikiproject:
Pickleball is not tennis. Pickleball does not use any implements, balls, court, in common with tennis. Beyond the basics present in every racketsport, the rules are not the same as tennis. Pickleball was not invented on a tennis court, nor was it invented as an offshoot of tennis (see "History"), and it is still not an offshoot of tennis. Pickleball does not claim to be tennis, nor is the play all that similar to tennis most of the time. The governing bodies of pickleball are not in any way related to those of tennis. There are millions of pickleball players who do not play tennis. There are tens of thousands of dedicated pickleball courts, on which you cannot play tennis.
Pickleball doesn't belong under the umbrella of tennis any more than it belongs under the umbrella of racquetball, volleyball, badminton, ping pong, or anything else you can think of. Though I agree that there is a visual similarity between the two sports on a surface level, that is not enough for tennis to have a legitimate claim to this article. Cvscvs2 (talk) 04:06, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- I agree with you, but you have completely failed to explain why you are even talking about whether "tennis has a legitimate claim to this article".
- Did anyone actually say this?
- What would that even mean? 2601:200:C000:1A0:F196:779A:C4F5:ED4D (talk) 16:31, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
- Yes i do agree with you and there are a lot of people who search about it online if these both games have similarities with each other. i also read an article about it you can check it out too that showed the difference between pickleball and tennis. For me, I learned that its totally foolish to try to play a tennis on a pickleball court. 223.123.18.229 (talk) 20:16, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
Governing body revisited
There have been two attempts this year (and based on username, by COI editors) to overwrite the International Federation of Pickleball article with information on a different organization, the International Pickleball Federation. This makes the situation about the governing body even murkier. What information do we have on outside sources recognizing an organization as the international governing body? Is there any coverage of this in independent reliable sources? Has IPF gone for GAISF membership? —C.Fred (talk) 15:14, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
The Sound of Pickleball
Most sports are sporadic and do not produce chronic, persistent and repetitive noise. For that reason, most states and jurisdictions have no regulations for noise generated from recreational activities. I would like to rename the section "Noise Controversy" and call it The Sound of Pickleball and share more of the science of intrusive sound and the backlash coming from communities who have been dealing with the unwanted noise. The "controversy" is that some players deny that there is a problem and I would like to re-frame this issue away from being a controversy to being a reality that must be met in terms of court sites, equipment used and other sound mitigation options. Any comments before I start?? NaliniL (talk) 03:05, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- I personally find basketball more annoying to hear, but it could be because I don't care for the sport. For example, when I Google news for "basketball court noise complaint" I get many hundreds of hits from legit news sources.
- Either way, there is a definite and persistent ball sound when it is played. In general, "noise complaints" of any variety are probably the biggest neighborhood gripe, so I'd oppose any mission creep in this article, since I don't think pickleball is unique in this way.
- But if you can find sensible ways to link to articles on noise (mitigation, ordinance, etc) from a civil aspect (assuming they exist), that seems very appropriate. 142.44.72.12 (talk) 00:48, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Link to document is no longer for the cited year
USAPA no longer keeps older rulebooks easily accessible; instead, the link https://usapickleball.org/what-is-pickleball/official-rules/ points to the current rulebook. Please see the References section on the Pickleball page. I modified the link text but don't know what to do about the "2022 rulebook" reference, which links to the current (at the moment, 2024) version of the rules. The rules do change from year to year and I don't know whether there's interest in the earlier versions; for example, "skinny singles" is now in the rulebook but didn't exist in 2022, AFAIK. No-kitchen courts
How common are courts with-out a no-volley area? The court by my apartment is one such court. Is this rare or common in densely developed areas? An Internet search didn't get any text but did return images of such courts. Kdammers (talk) 13:13, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- The non-volley zone, or "kitchen," is an integral part of the game. A court without a non-volley zone isn't a legal court according to the official rules. Are you sure that the court you're referring to is actually a pickleball court? Ian (talk) 17:57, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
