Incorrect pronunciation guide
[edit]I used to live in a very Welsh-speaking part of North Wales, and took an interest in Welsh. So, when I then moved to Pontypridd I assumed the place name was pronounced as in the article - /pɒntəˈpriːð/.
This was on the assumption that the place name was a contraction of "pont y pridd", in which the "y" is a sort of article, and pronounced /ə/ (a neutral sound, like "a in "a loaf of bread").
However, this was a mistake. The name is a contraction of "pont ty pridd", where "ty" means house, and is pronounced /ti/ - like tea in "a cup of tea".
So I think the correct pronunciation for the placename (and forgive me if I get this wrong, my IPA and ability to produce it in Wikipedia is rusty) is /pɒntiˈpriːð/ - or pont ee preeth (where the last sound, is a voiced labiodental fricative, like th in "the").
