The claim that my siblings and I have is that the name Pynchon may go all the way back to a Norman soldier on the Norman side of the Battle of Hastings. If the name is Norman, my next guess is that the name would have started in Norway, undergone a Gallo-Romanization in Normandy, and then been anglicized in England.
