Wasn't Thurleigh used as a motor sport venue at one time? Rupertlt (talk) 15:33, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Reference source[edit]
While researching for Thurleigh, I came across this reference [1] that may be a good source for the twelve o'clock high section. Derek Andrews (talk) 13:18, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Significant misstatement in "Twelve O'Clock High" section[edit]
The final sentence of the second paragraph under the header "Twelve O'Clock High" reads as follows: "The opening scenes of the film were however filmed at former RAF Chelveston, a station several miles to the north where the 306th Bomb Group was based."
In fact, this famous 1949 film's opening scene was filmed in Florida. The 12 B-17s used in the production were were not flown to England. Instead, a satellite airfield in the extensive Eglin Air Force Base grounds had a WWII control tower and other replica wartime structures built as a backdrop for filming.
While there are ample sources to confirm this, I sadly don't have them at hand. I would point others to the book "Celluloid Wings" by aviation film historian James Farmer, who also wrote an American Aviation Historical Society (AAHS) Journal many decades ago. His in-depth descriptions of this film's creation remain the definitive works on the subject.
I hesitate to simply delete the offending sentence and, lacking supporting citations, cannot credibly correct it myself. I'd appreciate any thoughts and guidance others may have as to how to proceed.
