Tallest Funnel

[edit]

I've seen the claim that Saxonia and Ivernia may have had the tallest funnel ever installed on a passenger liner in a few secondary sources on the internet. Queen Elizabeth 2 had (verifiably) a 69ft funnel structure which was 204ft above the keel. There have been claims, including in this article, that Saxonia/Ivernia had 100ft funnels.

This is probably a misunderstanding based on the measurement of the height above the keel (just over 140ft) minus the 'moulded depth' to the Upper Deck, which for Saxonia was a little over 41ft. This ignores the height of the Shelter Deck, Bridge Deck, and Promenade Deck, each about 8.5ft. Measuring against original plans gives a Superstructure height of about 78ft above the keel. This leads to a funnel height of 60-65ft for the Ivernia-class twins. The funnels are slightly narrower fore-to-aft than would be seen on later steamers, making them appear taller, perhaps contributing to the misconception.

Recommend the claim is removed entirely as it is contradicted by primary sources and seems to rely on unreliable secondary sources. Tobin Dax (talk) 09:48, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
