Overly harsh edit comment
Hello. I've just re-read my edit comment of today which read:
- "Noted rag historian"? Come on!
Seeing it back, it looks a bit harsh. I just wanted to say quickly that it wasn't meant to be thus. I was just expressing my feeling that there probably isn't anyone who's really notable for being a rag historian. Anyway, just thought I'd apologise on here for what might appear an overly harsh tone - no offence meant! Jamse 23:24, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Etymology
1) If it's true (as the article says) that "Raising and Giving" is a backronym, why is the canonical title of this page in capitals?
- Seconded. I've only seen it written as RAG in the last few years. Having sifted through many many rag mags from the last few decades from various unis, it was only ever written "Rag" or "rag". Bath Rag may still have a box of them if you want to investigate. UKRag has a fairly good description of the origins of the term. Huseyx2 18:40, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
2) It isn't known where the name Rag originates, but it is thought to be from the Victorian era when students took time out of their studies to collect rags to clothe the poor. Admit it, this is a wild conjecture :) Has anyone considered the old meaning of "rag", to play a prank? I'll check the OED later. The Wednesday Island 14:37, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
History
Some universities have archives that include mentions of Rag. If anybody is willing to spend time on it, here would be a great place to put your findings. Plus, it's wikipedia so it won't matter if it's inaccurate :).— Preceding unsigned comment added by Huseyx2 (talk • contribs) 19:01, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Barts and The London RAG
I notice that Nottingham and Loughborough get mentions as sucessful RAG organisations, but am certain that our RAG figures at Barts and the London Medical School beat there's per person at the institution. With around 2300 persons in the institution our rag figures for the RAG week 2007 were £131,000 - less than the year before. Equating to roughly £55 per person compared to £35 per person at loughborough (at 17,825 persons).— Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.37.63.137 (talk • contribs) 23:05, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Farnborough Sixth Form college Rag
I've put this down (there aren't any news articles on the college website yet) just to show Sixth Forms have rag weeks too :) Amzi (Talk To Me) 18:28, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
General things throughout the page
There seems to be quite a few "vanity" edits, presumably from someone involved at Loughborough Rag, none of which are referenced, and some of which are of questionable truth. There is no definition of what makes somewhere th "best" and further the claim of being the "biggest university fundraising organisation" is to my knowledge incorrrect. There are university fundraising operations, outside of Rags, which raise more, I will try to track down the one for Cambridge University I have seen, who fundraised/donated well over £1,000,000 Tabimpulse (talk) 19:54, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Ragabonds
I've removed a section on the "Ragabonds" twice now. Could those adding them please explain why they believe they should be mentioned in this article? I note;
- This article is not about them.
- They do not have a Wikipedia article of their own
- Two cites are supplied ; the first is a blog. Blogs are not reliable sources. The second is a dead link, but I suspect it merely listed them in a shortlist. This isn't enough to establish significance, or indeed verify much of what is said about them.
If other cites could be produced that established notability, I would suggest that the first thing to do would be to create an article for them. Then we have something to determine if they are significant to the concept of Student Rags as a whole. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 16:54, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, that's all I could find. Article reverted. Huseyx2 (talk) 12:28, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- oh yes, and the ragabonds article was already created twice but deleted. Huseyx2 (talk) 12:31, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the links. From the look of them it certainly could be demonstrated that The Ragabonds are notable. Please create an article for them. The article may have deleted in the past because notability wasn't demonstrated at the time. But it probably could be now.
- However, they are not significantly more notable than any other rag society, so the case for them being mentioned here is still unconvincing. What have they done that particularly defined or changed the concept? What is about them particularly that adds to the reader's understanding of this article? If they were added to this article, why shouldn't every other rag society also be? Wikipedia is not a web-directory, nor should it be used to promote an organisation (no matter how deserving). --Escape Orbit (Talk) 16:28, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
