Maintenance template

[edit]

Hi, I do not understand the maintenance template on this page. Please assist @Beland:. Thanks Rossouw (talk) 08:52, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Dumbassman: Greetings, and thanks for your interest! We generally try to give the native translation for names of groups and places once, and that's usually on the main article for that topic. For example, instead of writing:
"ǃOeǂgâb (Erongo region)"
we should write:
"Erongo Region"
and note on that article that it is also called "ǃOeǂgâb" and which language that is from. If there is no article to link to, we could start a stub if the topic is considered notable enough to have an article. (That will also help attract more info on the topic.) For words where there will be no article to link to, probably the best thing to do is put the English term in the main sentence and put terms from other languages in parentheses (and a {{lang}} tag for spell-check purposes). This is simply because this is the English Wikipedia, and we expect many readers can only understand English, so we try to make words from other languages (which are often interesting to know!) unobtrusive and always provide translations. -- Beland (talk) 09:05, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok great, I understand. I assume you are referring to the first two paragraphs under History. I am hesitant to remove the native words, hopefully someone smarter than me comes along. Rossouw (talk) 09:27, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
