Salm-Salm was not a german state. A german state in the beginning of the 19th century has been the Principality of Salm (founded ca. 1801 after the Luneville treaty, lasting to the annection by France in 1811). The Principality of Salm was constructed of the Herrschaft Anholt and of western parts of the Fürstbistum Münster (Ämter Bocholt and Ahaus). The new owners of these territories, the principal houses of Salm-Salm and Salm-Kyrburg, created one principality, the Principality Salm. The capital has been Bocholt. The principal residences have been in Anholt (Anholt castle) and Ahaus (Ahaus castle).
