Geology of San Jorge Gulf Basin underlying the San Jorge Gulf
[edit]Because of intensive oil and gas exploration and filed development, the San Jorge Gulf Basin underlying the San Jorge Gulf has been intensively studied using various geophysical methods, the drilling of wildcat wells and and drilling wells for the commercial extraction of oil and gas. These wells have been logged using geophysical tools and well cuttings and cores have been collected from many. From this data, it has concluded that is definitely not an impact structure. Rather it is a complex rift basin associated with the separation of South America from Africa and the formation of the Atlantic Ocean starting in the Middle to Upper Jurassic.
