Moved from Scottish Deerhound to Deerhound because the AKC is the only major kennel club that calls it something other than simply Deerhound, and the dog breeds project is attempting to match the more common international usage. (As seen in List of dog breeds.) Elf | Talk 22:08, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I have made a few modest changes. The previous commentary on hunting to exhaustion was incorrect. Deer coursing and deer-stalking in the 1700-1800's in the Highlands of Scotland was gruelling physical exercise, mainly done on foot due to the rugged terrain. Allowing dogs to run deer to exhaustion on that ground was not sensible, dogs and deer could be easily lost. It happened occasionally, but it was not the aim. Later in the 19th century, the running of deer by speed was curtailed as deer and dogs would too easily run onto other owners' "deer forests" at a time when game reserves in Scotland were rapidly increasing in number, but decreasing in size. Deerhounds do not hunt rabbits - they have until recently been used to course hare in official coursing competition in the UK. Richard Hawkins 16:36, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Vulnerable Native Breed

This breed is classed in Britain as a VNB - a breed which originated in the UK but now has registration numbers with the Kennel Club of less then 300 puppies per year.

I'm a Canadian teenager on a gap year before Uni and I'm really interested in this. Would anyone like a VNB paragraph/link on this page? I can write it, but am ignorant about formatting etc. Plus, I'm trying to put together a whole collection on all 29 breeds on this list, including history and so on, using Wikipedia as one of my many sources. Rjwilmsi, if you would like to make a contribution or correction to this heading in the Scottish Deerhound, a contribution which should be neither arbitrary nor simply a personal opinion, please supply your motivation for calling the link "Deerhound Character" 'very misleading and untrue', then deleting it. deerhound!?

Mariomassone, Can you please supply confirmation, quoted from the text of the article from Fraser's magazine, Volume 25, Longmans, Green, and Co., 1842 that the dog illustrated is actually a "Scottish Deerhound" (a term which was not used in 1842) otherwise I can only presume that the dog type illustrated is a "deerhound" - in other words any dog used to hunt a deer. It doesn't really resemble a Scottish Deerhound, and I think it might be wise to remove it.--Richard Hawkins (talk) 21:09, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
