Boys name:

I find it hard to accept that Seren is a Welsh boys name as well as a girls name. 1) I have only come across one boy called Seren in Wales (where I live) and his name caused my wife and I (both Welsh speakers) to smile politely and ask how the mother came by the name, the answer was that she looked up how to say 'star' in Welsh in a dictionary - she didn't speak the name herself. 2) ALL nouns in Welsh are either masculine or feminine, this is a fact of Welsh grammar, and certain endings are clear markers of the sex of the noun. The ending -en is a clear marker of the female sex (so much so that many words can be differentiated in male and female versions by changing the ending -yn (masculine) to -en (feminine). It just wouldn't make sense to a Welsh speaker (which I am) to name a male child with a clearly feminine word, which is what the ending -en denotes seren as being.

I am intending to change this in the next couple of days but will leave it be for now to see if anyone wants to respond, but please don't depend on what some book of children's names says unless it has been written by a Welsh speaker. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.129.192.34 (talk) 18:46, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
