I added in this page since the Telecommunications wikiproject was requesting a submission. I included a brief generic explanation and then further detail on the service layer from an IMS perspective.

This article would benefit from a section about the service layer in C7 and CAMEL also.

Most of the information in the article is available in the 3GPP specification TS 23.228, however the specification does not really refer to this as 'layers', it is more concerned with the interface boundaries and protocols of the various IMS elements.

I welcome your feedback.

Great contribution! I was the one that called for this article in WP:TEL.
I added some material and references about the difference between the application layer and the service layer, and about service layer in SOA. Please improve it.
My interpretation is that the applicatoin layer in telecommunications is all about middleware. Am I right?
The article should also include sections about Service layer in Intelligent Networks and perhaps in WAP, in Middleware, in distributed systems, etc. More sources would be helpful. See for example http://scholar.google.com and http://books.google.com .Mange01 (talk) 22:28, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Service Layer & Service Layers Pattern

[edit]

The section Service layer in SOA describes a particular kind of service layer in an SOA whereas the Service Layers Pattern provides guidelines for creating multiple service layers according to different functional contexts, hence does not seem right to merge Service Layers Pattern with the Service Layer. The constant contributor (talk) 15:05, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I stumbled across this article in New Page patrol. I want to merge this with the general article, possibly creating a new section. I do not want to add it to the section you mentioned. Wikipedia is not a how to guide, and if this is an article that shows how to create a Service Layers Pattern then it is not a proper article. This article has many problems, with some of them being that it all is referenced to one source (or very similar sources) and that it is too complicated for the average reader to understand. I do not know about this, so I unfortunately cannot be of help, however, this concept does not appear to be notable enough to warrant its own article. The intended audience for Service Layers Pattern article include software engineering related people who have some understanding of service-orientation (as mentioned in the very first sentence of the article). Secondly, in order to justify the notability, I have added some citations and general references. The constant contributor (talk) 11:27, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is designed to serve a general audience. The article needs to be tweaked to reflect that fact. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 13:09, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I support the merge, just to get rid of this dreck. Lfstevens (talk) 23:42, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
