Shawn Fanning went to Northeastern University's College of Computer Science. He wrote the first version of Napster as a freshman and then decided to drop out of school and devote his full time to the program.

Cameo in the Italian Job
That's strange that he played himself in the movie. I didn't know that but I remember very well that the pseudo-hacker accused him of having stolen the name "Napster". I actually understood this as a kick in his ass from Hollywood because it puts him a bad light as if he was a accustomed to stealing. - Can someone at least mention the Italian Job reference in the article? Like many other celebritity articles, it'd be great if there was a "in pop culture" reference section in this one as well. Metallica T-Shirt at MTV Awards.
"In 2000, Shawn Fanning appeared as a presenter at the MTV VMAs. He appeared wearing a "Metallica" tshirt, and when asked where he got it, stated, "I borrowed it from a friend." Lars Ulrich's reaction was shown as yawning and feigned sleep."
Greater context should be added to this so it can be understood by someone who isn't of age enough to have known what the situation was with this 10 years ago. Basically, Ulrich, who is a member of the group Metallica, was a vocal critic of Napster, accusing it of theft, while a common defense from Napster was that users were "barrowing" others mp3s. This doesn't state Ulrich's relation to Shawn or Napster, why Shawn would wear a metallica T-shirt, or why he would say that.

Self promotional?
This bit "Shawn quickly learned that he already knew all of the material being taught to him in classes and was even placed in higher classes he was not qualified to be in. Even then, Shawn became frustrated because he had already learned all the material being taught to him by professors and tutors and eventually dropped out of Northeastern in 1999." sounds like a PR piece.
