This looks like a collage of colonial-era French accounts translated verbatim and insufficiently cleaned up: "the barbaric and furious local assailants"? "ceaselessly subject to outrages and the fury of a fierce and relentless population"? "their heroic attitude which had imposed their respect on their torturers"?
