Good job![edit]

If this page is to be believed, and I think it is, this article is the second most edited in the last week and has drawn edits by the fifth most editors. It's nowhere close to done, but it's certainly better than it was when I created it. Good job, everyone – here's to continued collaboration and improvement! ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 03:25, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Purportedly? Video needs added context.[edit]

In regards to Israeli officials' proof of their video showing Palestinian gunmen shooting in a narrow alley. They "later backtracked" on their claims after Israeli human rights group released their own video, showing that the journalist was not anywhere nearby that site when she was shot. Such info warrants to be included, which I noticed is currently absent or haven't been updated yet.

(Israeli officials initially suggested Abu Akleh was struck by militant fire and released a video showing gunmen firing at Israeli forces in a narrow alley inside the Jenin refugee camp. They later backtracked after an Israeli human rights group released its own video showing the site of the shooting was several hundred metres away from where Abu Akleh was killed.)

Back to work as usual[edit]

Interrupting funerals is commonplace of course, only an exception was made for Shireen in reportage. As that furor was buried, this happened, and is relevant to her article Nishidani (talk) 20:36, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nishidani: would the interruption/regulation of funerals warrant its own article? Thriley (talk) 21:15, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I shouldn't think so, because, while frequent, it has not to my knowledge yet to have received comprehensive analysis in the secondary literature. But the press's 'surprise', and the foreign governments' expressions of outrage at what happened at Shireen Abu Akleh's funeral struck me as odd. No one familiar with police practices there should have been astonished. It's just she was 'important' whereas the latest chap shot dead and then denied a dignified funeral, as the authoress notes connecting the two, is only one of an endless list of insignificant Palestinians, who don't, to use the Jane Austin expression, 'signify'. Having just bashed up Palestinian mourners twice, the Jerusalem police gave the go-ahead to a march by Israeli nationalists who will chant and sneer their way through the heart of the Muslim quarter in a day or two. Nishidani (talk) 21:41, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The BBC's Tom Bateman will be on the receiving end of Israeli ire Israeli police accused of violence towards shot Palestinian's family for using the forbidden word "stormed" ("The family of a Palestinian man left seriously wounded after Israeli police stormed a cemetery have accused officers of using unjustifiable force."). Her birthday is actually April 3, not January 3, which this Wikipedia article mistakenly has - please correct this. She was my mother's best friend, so we know that her birthday is definitely April 3. 71.114.23.218 (talk) 20:53, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 21:21, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It was changed - her bday is April 3. 108.31.49.75 (talk) 23:49, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Palestinian position regarding the investigation[edit]

Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior Palestinian Authority official, announced today (Saturday) that the PA would welcome cooperation with all international bodies in investigating the circumstances of the deadly shooting in al-Jazeera Shirin Abu Aqla. A-Sheikh's statement today is in stark contrast to a statement he issued two days ago, in which he announced that the investigation would be conducted independently by the Palestinian Authority. He said at the time that the results of the investigation would be communicated to all relevant parties, including the United States.

The Palestinians say they have filed the case with the ICC. I added that as the latest info.Selfstudier (talk) 11:40, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cnn[edit]

Cnn investigation Uses evidence (some of which may be of interest). This is a high percentage of their investigation. Why is it not mentioned? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.55.54.55 (talk) 05:25, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's mentioned now. Endwise (talk) 06:13, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DoB[edit]

Can we find an authoritative RS for this? I see January, May and now we have April (is that OR?) Selfstudier (talk) 12:24, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It is Apr 3 and has been corrected. 108.31.49.75 (talk) 23:50, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The cited source ([1]) appears to say April 13, not April 3. ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 00:10, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

photo[edit]

The one should probably also be deleted as a copyvio, a supposed free image containing a copyrighted image is still covered. I sent a media request message to al-Jazeera asking them to release a photo of her under the CC license, but if anybody here has any contacts there that would probably get a quicker response than nableezy asking for a free photo on a web form. nableezy - 16:32, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the current image a copyvio? Was it falsely uploaded as someone's 'own work'? Because that was the only problem with the previous deletions. Iskandar323 (talk) 17:25, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But agreed, a CC release from Al-Jazeera is the ideal! Iskandar323 (talk) 17:26, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You cant take a picture of a copyrighted photo and claim it is a free photo. The current photo in the article is just a photo of another copyrighted photo. nableezy - 17:40, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently freedom of panorama is actually broad enough to allow for that in Israel - check the commons discussions for the previous deletions. Iskandar323 (talk) 17:44, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
where the aforesaid work is permanently situated in a public place. This is a flyer that is not permanently situated there. If the Statue of Michael Jordan were on display in Tel Aviv instead of Chicago then a photo of it would be covered as free. Dont think that applies here. nableezy - 19:43, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But the specific guideline for Israel that is referred to in the discussion says that freedom of panorama is specifically broader in Israel and includes things like adverts, advertising, maps - and one could certainly argue that protest posters are, in essence, a form of advertising - albeit for a cause rather than monetary gain or services.
